When it comes to losing weight, it seems like there’s always a new food trend to try. The “ice hack diet,” for example, is gaining popularity thanks to its unique yet simple concept. What does this diet consist of? It basically involves consuming cold foods to cool your body temperature from the inside, claiming to promote weight loss.
We spoke with a registered dietitian who explains everything you need to know about the Ice Hack diet, how it works, and how effective it can be at melting body fat.
What is the Ice Hack diet?
“The process behind the Ice Hack diet is that it would promote weight loss by cooling the body temperature from the inside,” explains Lena Bakovic, MS, RDN, CNSCfrom Top Nutrition Coaching.
Now you may be wondering, “Do I only eat ice cream on this diet?” Not enough! Bakovic says the diet involves incorporating and consuming more cold-temperature foods.
“One can definitely include ice in this diet! Any cold foods and/or drinks can be included as long as they do not exceed the estimated daily calorie needs/deficit calculated to promote weight loss,” says Bakovic.
As the name suggests, hot foods are not part of this diet.
“Like a cold bath or ice bath, which lowers body temperature from the outside, consuming cold foods as part of this diet aims to lower body temperature from the inside,” adds Bakovic. “Some people believe that [by] in doing so, the metabolic rate and function [increase]which in turn can accelerate weight loss.
Can the Ice Hack Diet Help You Lose Weight?
To understand how effective the Ice Hack diet is for weight loss, let’s first talk about cold exposure.
According to search results published in the International Journal of Circumpolar Health, cold exposure, meaning a quick dip in cold water, can help burn calories and body fat. Additionally, cold exposure can benefit overall health, as it has a positive impact on stress, diabetes, insulin resistance, and other diseases associated with aging.
It goes without saying that research supports the effectiveness of certain methods of cold exposure for weight loss.
“If, by following this diet, a calorie deficit is consistently achieved, then weight loss will be a likely outcome, and this will not necessarily be due to the ice content or consumption of cold foods,” Bakovic tells us . “More research is definitely needed to support the theory that cooling the body from the inside increases metabolic rate and function.”
