A dietitian shares frozen foods that promote weight loss and keep you full.
It’s a new year, and if your resolutions involve weight loss, Tara Collingwood, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD/N, ACSM-CPT, certified sports dietitian and co-author of Flat stomach recipe book for dummiesis here to help you, even if you don’t have time to cook. There are many frozen foods that can help you achieve your goals. “Foods that are lower in calories, balanced in protein/fiber, and convenient. Frozen foods can support weight loss goals when chosen wisely (look for lean protein, vegetables, fiber, moderate sodium) rather than heavily processed, high-fat, or high-sugar options,” she says. “Protein and fiber contribute to satiety. Choose meals with at least 20 g of protein and some fiber to stay more satisfied,” she says. Also check the sodium. “Some frozen meals are high in sodium. Look for less than 600 mg per serving,” she adds. “You can add extra yogurt, fruit, or vegetables to many frozen meals to round them out.” Here are the 7 best frozen foods for weight loss in the new year.
Healthy Choice Frozen Meals

Healthy Choice frozen meals are one of the best options for weight loss. “Brand known for its portion-controlled meals which tend to be lower in calories and higher in protein/vegetables with options like Grilled Chicken and Vegetable Bowls or Cauliflower and Curry Power Bowls being good choices,” says Collingwood.
Lean cooking

Lean Cuisine is another great brand. “A classic frozen meal brand typically focused on low-calorie meals (~200-300 calories) with balanced macros like their Balanced Lemon Garlic Shrimp Stir-Fry Bowl can help control calories while still providing protein,” she says.
The smart ones

Smart Ones is a solid option. “Smart Ones offers a range of frozen meals and entrees aimed at calorie-conscious eating,” says Collingwood. “They have lots of choices, from breakfast to dinner, and many are portion controlled to manage weight.”
Green Giant frozen vegetables

Green Giant frozen vegetables are a must-buy. “It’s not a ‘meal,’ but their frozen vegetables are great for adding volume and nutrients without too many calories to meals (steamed vegetables, bowl mixes, etc.),” she says.
Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods

Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods is a health-conscious brand that offers healthy options. “Offers all-natural frozen items like veggie burgers, veggie bites, and fish sticks that are generally low in saturated fat and calories, with no artificial additives,” she says.
Trader Joe’s Frozen Options

Trader Joe’s Frozen Options (store brand) is a line of delicious and often nutritious frozen meals. “While not a national brand, TJ’s frozen meals like chicken burrito bowls and vegetable stir-fry mixes are examples of balanced nutrition, with good protein and fiber. I also like their Indian options,” says Collingwood.
Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars

Want something for dessert? Yasso Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars will satisfy your sweet tooth. “For a sweet but light treat, brands like Yasso offer portion-controlled frozen yogurt bars that are relatively low in calories (often 80 to 100 calories), helping satisfy cravings without derailing goals. Even my kids love them!”
